PEMF Therapy at HOLOS NYC

How PEMF Works

The cells of your body maintain stored energy, or voltage, that represents the ability to execute the functions that keep you alive. When cells lose voltage due to environmental stressors, lack of exercise, injury, or inadequate nutrition it creates an environment for the onset of dysfunction that can lead to illness and chronic pain. Drafting on the mid-20th century laboratory work of Harold Saxton Burr at Yale that identified the link between measurable imbalances in the electrical field of an organ and the onset of illness, Dr. Jerry Tennant states in Healing is Voltage that cells, like batteries, are designed to run at -20 to -25 mV. When voltage levels drop cells struggle to function creating an environment for chronic pain and disease. The rapidly changing field of a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) has been observed to induce an electric current in the tissue, producing stimulation of charged particles in support of optimizing the voltage necessary to maintain energy for normal cellular function.

Benefits of PEMF Therapy

PEMF can be beneficial in helping with the following: stress management and emotional healthrelaxation and sleepperformance and recoverycirculationbrain function and focusimmune supportbone and joint healthenergy level and metabolism.

As Dr. Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University states, “PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) devices do not treat a specific condition. Instead they optimize the body’s natural self-healing and self-regulating function.”

Increased Circulation

Deficient blood cells tend to clump together. PEMFs create a charge field that de-clumps the ‘sticky’ blood cells, which allows for greater circulation.

PEMFs stimulate chemical in the blood vessel walls that cause a  dilation of the blood vessels. This leads to an improved blood flow and an increase in the amount of oxygen and nutrition that can be delivered to the cells and discharging the cellular waste matter.

PEMFs enhance blood oxygenation.

Enhanced Muscle Function

PEMF’s decrease tension and pain which leads to a greater abundance of  Myosin Phosphorylation (MP). MP is the process that allows muscles to work harder, longer, and to recover quickly.

Decreased Inflammation

PEMFs reduce chronic inflammation. Inflammation is a process that is triggered by the body to repair cellular damage by increasing circulation to the affected areas, while also increasing healing inflammatory cells. However, when this process becomes prolonged due to chronic stressors, chronic inflammation becomes the norm and chronic pain and disease soon ensue.

Decrease in Stress

Stress is the cause of 65% of our illnesses. Magnetic fields have been demonstrated to decrease stress. PEMF’s with a sensory deprivation session can be quite rejuvenating and refreshing.

Bone Repair

PEMF’s can help the bones heal from trauma, surgery and disease. Bone regeneration can be beneficial to those with osteoporosis and osteopenia.

PEMFs have also been shown to help with:

  • improving tissue healing

  • reducing muscle tension & pain

  • slowing the development of arthritis

  • making soft tissue more flexible

  • increasing energy

  • stimulating the immune system

  • helping the body to detoxify

  • reducing blood pressure

  • improving clotting factors

  • helping nerve function

  • improving sleep

  • helping liver function

Is PEMF new and is it safe to use?

PEMF has been safely used for more than 50 years. 2000+ studies have proven the benefits of PEMF as it is a widely used therapy improving health and enhancing performance of people and animals around the world. For a more comprehensive history of PEMF, please visit Dr. Ryan’s blog here. For more information about this revolutionary technology, visit PEMFinfo.com, a free database of PEMF studies, or pubmed.gov, a free search engine accessing abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics.

PEMF is typically safe to use unless you have an implanted electronic device including a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear hearing device, are pregnant, actively bleeding or have blood clots. In such cases, PEMF may not be an option for you. The FDA started approving PEMF back in 1979 for bone loss (it was even used by NASA to support the astronauts when they returned to Earth). The FDA made additional approvals in 1987 for post-operative edema and pain, 2004 as an adjunct to cervical fusion surgery, and 2011 for depression.

Dosage

Dosing is based on your need for results. The variables are intensity, duration of intensity, frequency of intensity versus the disease. Treatments for moderate to serious conditions are carefully prescribed and supervised by Dr. Malouf. The diseased tissue needs to be stimulated sufficiently to make a change.

Please feel free to ask for a consult with Dr. Malouf for general health concerns and for how to  use the PEMFs  with our other services such as acupuncture, Theraphi, the sensory deprivation suites (floats), and the hyperbaric chamber.

Adverse Reactions / Safety

Most adverse reactions are a result of the healing process and are mild and temporary, and can be managed by simply continuing the therapy. Sudden increases in circulation, especially in areas with restricted or reduced blood flow may lead to uncomfortable increases in circulation for a short time after the magnetic field has been applied. When nerve cells are suddenly stimulated, pain may be temporarily aggravated due to the increased signal traffic in the nerve and/or improved circulation to the nerve/s. This is mostly seen  in individuals who have had previous trauma or scars.

Magnetic therapies commonly lower blood pressure and decrease heart rate, which are actions that are almost always positive. These actions can pose a concern for individuals who are elderly, on medication with blood-pressure-lowering actions, are frail, have labile or easily altered blood pressures, have been on extensive bed rest, are in shock or have overwhelming systemic infection, or who have non-brisk, compensatory vascular reflexes.  Usually these reactions settle down as magnetic therapy continues and stabilizes body functions.

If the adverse reactions are intolerable, you can lessen them by making some small changes to your protocols. These changes include lowering intensity, decreasing treatment times, and limiting the amount of the body that is being treated. These changes should only be necessary on a short-term basis, as such reactions tend to diminish relatively quickly with continued treatment

As a general caution / contraindication, PEMf’s are not recommended during pregnancy or for those with implanted electronics (implanted defibrillators, modulators, insulin pumps)

Adequate water intake and supplementing with electrolytes creates an opportunity for the magnetic fields to be optimally effective. Proper levels of electrolytes are essential due to the magnetic fields effects on the ions (especially calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium.) Please consult with Dr. Malouf, or ask the operators what is recommended.

Precautions & Contraindications. Although there are no absolute contraindications or side-effects, it is not advisable to use the system under the following conditions: pregnancy or carrying any kind of implanted electronic devices (e.g. pacemaker or defibrillator)
